What Does Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Do?

The benefits of pelvic floor physical therapy are numerous. If you struggle with incontinence, pain, or other pelvic floor dysfunction, you will benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy. Improving the coordination and strength of your pelvic floor can improve your life in many ways.

Signs You Should Consider Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

If you are on the fence about whether therapy would help you, these are just a few signs you should make an appointment:

·     •  Losing control of urine or bowel movements

·      • Feeling the urge to urinate frequently

·      • Pelvic pain in the vulva, vagina, testicles, penis, anus

·      • Pain during sexual intercourse, tampon use, or pelvic exams

·      • Prolapse

·      • Episiotomy and C-section scarring

·      • Constipation

This list is by no means exhaustive. If you suspect that you are living with pelvic floor dysfunction, you should consult with our professional. Our pelvic floor physical therapist will assess your musculoskeletal system to determine how you will benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy.

What Happens During Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy starts with a conversation about what you are experiencing followed by a thorough physical exam of muscles and joints. A pelvic floor therapist may ask you about getting an internal/external pelvic exam, and this is always optional. The exam is helpful to gather information about why you’re experiencing your symptoms, but it is never required and you will always have control over what exam and treatment is performed on your body.  Based upon the findings, many different techniques may be utilized in your treatment, including, but not limited to, muscular training of the pelvic floor and surrounding muscles, manual therapy/myofascial release, biofeedback, exercises, nerve releases, trigger point therapy, and joint mobilization. At times internal techniques may be used according to the specific findings of your evaluation with our pelvic floor physical therapist.

Additionally, our therapist may recommend lifestyle modifications that will help you train your muscles and even your nervous system. Education is a key component of physical therapy to ensure a full recovery. Your therapist will provide education about anatomy and teach you pelvic floor exercises that will help you improve your control over the muscles as well as improve the tone of your pelvic floor.
