What to expect in physical therapy

What to Expect in Physical Therapy

If you’ve never undergone physical therapy before, you may not know what to expect. Physical therapy is a gradual, strategic process to help reduce pain and restore mobility throughout your body. At West Loop Spine & Stability, we have been providing residents of the West Loop, River North, South Loop, Streeterville, Gold Coast, Ukrainian Village, and greater Chicago area with reliable physical therapy services for many years.

Goals of Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is about repairing your body, restoring your mobility, and maximizing your comfort levels. Our chiropractor may recommend physical therapy if you’ve been in an accident and suffered injuries that are causing ongoing difficulty. Sports-related wear-and-tear can also often be treated with physical therapy, often allowing you to avoid drugs or invasive procedures altogether. Physical therapists specialize in muscles, joints, and everything else that helps your body move comfortably, making them natural partners with our chiropractor. Both seek to reduce pain, improve your quality of life, and help your body do most of the work healing itself the way it’s designed to.

Your First Session

Before your first appointment, you’ll be given a thorough assessment to determine your areas of greatest need. This usually includes some strength tests to establish a starting point with essential muscles and several “range of motion” activities to identify problem areas. An individual’s physical therapy routine is determined by their specific needs, so not everyone will be doing the same thing, or doing it in the same way.

You may find a few of the activities uncomfortable at first, but your body will adjust quickly. The number of sessions required for you to make a full recovery will depend on the source, severity, and location of your immobility. Physical therapy following a minor injury may only last a few sessions, while other conditions may require a dozen visits or more. Expect our physical therapist to instruct you in corrective stretches and exercises to perform at home to enhance the benefits of your treatment.
